My Treasure Chest

In my readings of Charlotte Mason, I came upon a life-changing concept. She wrote about, “furnishing the mind.” I love this idea. It entails deliberately placing things into one’s mind, creating a place of reflection, rest, repose. We could go about this by memorising poetry, reading books, being attentive to nature, watching a sunset, creating memories with family and friends. The thing is to ask questions. How would I like to furnish this room, which is my mind? Is this to be a dumping ground for whatever ideas come across my path on a daily basis; chaotic and disorganised like some kitchen drawer full of junk - news, other peoples’ wants and desires, toxic music, soap operas? Or will I be deliberate about what is placed there? Daily, there are so many ideas that one can choose to tune into or out of, but we can choose. I should be discerning because one day, if for whatever reason I am unable to participate fully in life, the thing I shall most likely be left with is my mind. I would like to furnish my mind then, and the minds of my family, by reading, watching and listening to beautiful things. I wish to create beautiful memories. I should choose to speak and hear beautiful words. And when I discover a pretty piece of mind furniture, I should wish to offer it and share it, like a good cup tea, with friends. This little poem was written on the 3rd of March in 2017. I had it in mind then, that one day, I would write and share some of the beautiful treasures which I hoped to collect on life’s journey.

My Treasure Chest by Jo Daisy

When I have time upon my hands,

Not quite enough to muse on lands,

But just enough to look upon,

Some pretty things which I now own,

My heart of treasures dear to me,

Of which I will reveal to thee.

I have some pearls of poetry,

Some rubies of reflection,

And sapphires of sayings true,

Psalms of praise and protection,

These beautify my life within,

Bequeath me joy to serve my King.

May you find many beautiful treasures on life’s journey to furnish your mind.

With joy and beauty,

Jo xxx
